Career Development research grants are given annually to support junior faculty members as they begin their careers in academic medicine. Tower supports physician scientists who are pursuing a career in academic medicine focusing on a bench-to-bedside approach. With the current shortage of federal funding, these funds are much needed to support the future of cancer research.

Tower Cancer Research Foundation has awarded nearly $2,500,000 in Career Development research funds to 35 physicians over the past 10 years.

Year Number Amount
2006 3 $25,000
2007 3 $50,000
2008 4 $50,000
2009 4 $50,000
2010 4 $50,000
2011 5 $100,000
2012 3 $100,000
2013 3 $100,000
2014 4 $100,000
2015 3 $100,000

Tower realizes the importance of supporting senior investigators with the continuation of their well-established research programs. To that end, Tower awards five-year, $500,000 Senior Investigator grants to world renowned scientists for the exploration of a novel bio-medical research hypothesis related to the etiology, mechanisms and treatment of cancer.

Tower Cancer Research Foundation has awarded $1,000,000 in Senior Investigator research funds to 2 physicians over the past year.

Year Number Amount
2015 2 $500,000

In 2015 Tower awarded a $1,000,000 Jack Mishkin Discovery Fund for Mesothelioma Research to Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. With scientific excellence and an ambitious vision, the institute is giving hope to patients with mesothelioma. With Tower’s support, Cedars-Sinai team members will collaborate across disciplines to investigate how mesothelioma begins, how it grows, and how to halt its progression. Team members will conduct research that spans the continuum — from novel laboratory explorations, to translational experiments, to clinical trials that test the safety and efficacy of new interventions for the prevention and treatment in humans. Clinical scientists and basic scientists will submit proposals and, after a rigorous peer-review process by the multi-disciplinary committee, a winning project(s) will be selected.
