11/16/2009 Men Also Have Breast Cancer Genes
It is well known that women with BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genes have a marked increase risk of breast cancer during their lifetimes. A fact that has generally been overlooked is that men can inherit the same genes, and if they do, their risk of breast cancer is increased 7 fold, the risk of prostate cancer is doubled, and pancreas cancer tripled. Male relatives of women with BRCA genes should be encouraged to be tested, not only for their own sake, but also for the purpose of acquiring potentially important genetic information for their (especially female) children. www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_1

10/26/2009 Adjuvant Hormonal Therapy for Breast Cancer
Two different categories of drugs have been found quite effective in preventing recurrent breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose tumors were endocrine-responsive. Both drugs, letrozole and tamoxifen, are extensively used worldwide. An important five-year trial (The BIG 1-98) asked two main questions: 1) whether it would be better to use these drugs sequentially (2 years of one, then 3 years of the other), and 2) which of the two drugs given alone for 5 years is superior. After six years of follow-up from the onset of the trial, it was determined that sequential therapy was no more beneficial than single-drug treatment. Furthermore, there was no difference in survival of patients when one drug was directly compared to the other, although there was a trend in favor of letrozole which was not statistically significant. The conclusion was that both letrozole and tamoxifen administered alone for 5 years are satisfactory treatment, even though many experts are leaning toward letrozole because of the trend in survival, and a better toxicity profile.
